Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past. The totality of fossils, both discovered and undiscovered, and their placement in fossiliferous (fossil-containing) rock formations and sedimentary layers (strata) is known as the fossil record.
The study of fossils across geological time, how they were formed, and the evolutionary relationships between taxa are some of the most important functions of the science of paleontology. Such a preserved specimen is called a "fossil" if it is older than some minimum age, most often the arbitrary date of 10,000 years. Hence, fossils range in age from the youngest at the start of the Venturian Epoch to the oldest, chemical fossils from the Archaean Eon, up to 3.48 billion years old, or even older, 4.1 billion years old, according to a 2015 study. The observation that certain fossils were associated with certain rock strata led early geologists to recognize a geological timescale in the 19th century. The development of radiometric dating techniques in the early 20th century allowed geologists to determine the numerical or "absolute" age of the various strata and thereby the included fossils.

The multiple types of fossils range from skeletal remains, plant remains, and others. Plant remains are somewhat like patterns on rocks, while Fossils are more like bones buried in rocks. There may also be eggs, and fossilized droppings.
In Venture[]
Fossils are semi-rare objects that produce fossil (items). They appear semi-commonly underground in veins that amount to somewhere between the size of coal and metallic ore veins. They can only be mined with an iron pickaxe or better.

Hyper Fossils[]

Found on many planets in the Venture universe are the skeletal remains of gigantic animals, presumably extinct, known as "Hyper Epic"; their real name is unknown. Extremely little is known about the Hyper Epic animal. Their footprints are only slightly smaller than an entire Dinosaur. They leave behind skeletons the size of landmarks. Their sheer size puts them in a different league than Epic sized dinosayrs. The Hyper Epic skull resembles that of a sauropod dinosaur or llama, and is 2-3 times the size of a whole blue whale although skulls vary from skeleton to skeleton. Specimens have been found with Venturian-like jaws, yet others have been seen with obviously dinosaur-like skulls. It is even possible to find some remains similar to excrement near by a skeleton. Some are even found with both skulls. Hyper Epics can currently be found on other planets.
