Horseshoe crabs are marine arthropods of the family Limulidae and order Xiphosura or Xiphosurida, that live primarily in and around shallow ocean waters on soft sandy or muddy bottoms. They occasionally come onto shore to mate. They are commonly used as bait and in fertilizer. In recent years, a decline in the population has occurred as a consequence of coastal habitat destruction in Japan and overharvesting along the east coast of North America. Tetrodotoxin may be present in the roe of species inhabiting the waters of Thailand. Because of their origin 450 million years ago (Mya), horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils.

In Venture

In Venture, Horseshoe Crabs are one of the creatures that can be resurrected by fossils. They are part of a trio with itself, Fossil of the Helix (Ammonite/Nautilus), and Amber (Pterodactyl). The Eurypterid is the fossil counterpart to them, as they can also be resurrected from the Fossil of the Dome. When Hell was added, Horseshoe Crabs could now spawn there, being the only natural place to find them. In Venture mythology, Horseshoe Crabs are the Messengers of the Demon, Dome. This is why the fossil is dubbed the Fossil of the Dome. Its behavior in Venture will usually trigger it to attack Ammonites, Nautiluses, and Pterodactyls. When killed, they drop a Dome Shell, and Blue Blood.

  • Although they are not extinct in Real Life, in Venture they are virtually extinct besides in Hell. Venture is opposite of Real Life, since Horseshoe Crabs are virtually everywhere in water.
